Featuring
the Appro Xtreme-X Supercomputer
The Appro Xtreme-X1 offers a high value and attractive
price/performance package with a significantly reduced TCO for HPC
IT organizations. It features a reliable and scalable architecture
with 128 nodes/512 Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processors and
6TF of computing power in a single 42U equipment rack. It offers
hot-swappable blades, redundant cooling fans, and efficient “Power-Factor-Corrected”
power supplies. Appro’s Xtreme-X1 Supercomputer also features
a new Directed Airflow™ cooling configuration designed to
reduce datacenter floor space by 30% while maximizing power and
cooling efficiency. In addition, it features redundant (Dual Rail)
Infiniband connections with low latency Mellanox ConnectX host channel
adapters as well as Ethernet management fabric and network switches
with all critical components being easily accessible, hot-swappable,
and redundant for reliability and serviceability. The Appro Xtreme-X1
Supercomputer is ideal for demanding applications that require higher
reliability and better system management in HPC. To learn more,

Appro at Forefront of Supercomputer History - Advances Research
at Lawrence Livermore National Lab
From the early days monolithic mainframes, through
the vector supercomputers era and massively parallel systems era,
LLNL has been home to many firsts in supercomputing and has been
a driving force behind such development. While LLNL still has some
of the largest supercomputers in existence like BlueGene/L and Purple,
they realized the need to also field scalable compute resources
comprised of hundreds and sometimes thousands of clustered commodity
compute nodes/servers interconnected with high-performance commodity
interconnects running Linux operating system and cluster tools.
These Linux clusters can be created in much less time, built from
standard industry servers, and assembled for significantly fewer
dollars per peak teraFLOP/s. Through high speed interconnects, compute
nodes can be clustered together to form a new generation of scalable
and highly flexible supercomputers able to meet LLNL’s programmatic
need for additional, cost effective, large-scale simulation capacity.

The Datacenter Behind Gossamer-Threads Hosting Services Powered
by Appro Servers
In 1995 Gossamer Threads launched with a focus on
creating quality web applications. As years passed, Gossamer Threads
experienced a fair share of hosting providers running their applications,
most of which fell short of their expectations and needs. Realizing
that their customers deserved more, Gossamer Threads expanded their
business to include hosting services. Based on their extensive knowledge
and expertise of web software, and their experience with many different
hosting platforms, Gossamer Threads developed a high quality, top
performance, and secure solution so that clients could host websites
in a fast, scalable and reliable environment. No longer did clients
have to worry about the technical side of things; Gossamer Threads
would take care of that, so they could focus on running their business.
“The first order of business was to choose a server vendor,
one that would not lock us in due to proprietary hardware and components
but deliver the flexibility we would need to handle the growth we
anticipated,” said Alex Krohn, Founder. “Our requirements
were pretty straight forward; we needed a solution that would be
very reliable, flexible, scalable and cost effective. It had to
be built upon standard industry components and take cost of ownership
into account. We wanted a server solution that would have a long
life span and be simple to scale and cluster. Our market differentiator
had to be the reliability and performance of our hosting solution.”

Appro High Performance Clusters Power ANSYS/Fluent
Flow-Modeling Simulations
Recently, ANSYS engineering consultants needed to expand
their cluster capacity in order to run flow-modeling simulations
for a customer who had critical requirements for rapid turnaround.
The Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is used for
simulating fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and a host of related
phenomena involving turbulence, reactions, and multiphase flow.
“Our customers sometimes turn to us to when their simulation
requirements exceed the capacity of their internal HPC resources,”
said Barbara Hutchings, who manages partnerships at ANSYS.
ANSYS turned to Appro to supply state-of-the-art cluster servers
to support the project. Appro supplied a dynamic scalable HPC cluster
of 40 1U, 2-socket Appro XtremeServers, adding up to 160 cores of
AMD Opteron processors. To retrieve this case study, click
